Within the safe and welcoming environment of my office, I invite my patients to ask me questions regarding their gynecologic health. I assure them no question is silly or embarrassing. This blog will serve as a resource for me to share real patient questions with my answers and insight. While my responses are based on my medical knowledge and the latest scientific literature, the information provided is not meant to replace a medical consult with your physician.

Dear Dr. Hanna,

My hair is thinning! I have noticed a large amount of hair in my brush daily. My ponytail seems thinner. I saw my primary care provider and had my thyroid checked after reading about causes of hair loss online. My primary care physician recommended minoxidil but I forget to use it. I think my hair loss is related to my hormones. Are there any other treatment options for women? I am considering wig shopping.

Wig Shopping

Dear Wig Shopping,

Hair loss and thinning hair are common complaints of my patients in their 40’s and beyond. Hormonal changes definitely play a role in hair loss. Treatment options for women are limited but a new natural treatment option, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a game changer for us ladies!

Physicians began using PRP therapy about a decade ago to speed up the healing process in damaged joints. Recently, researchers found that high concentrations of platelets injected into the scalp can help promote hair growth. After much personal research, I was convinced this was the secret to maintaining our manes and became certified to offer PRP to my patients.

During a PRP session, my clinical staff takes your blood and then processes it in a special centrifuge to obtain your platelet rich plasma. I then inject your areas of concern. Your PRP will stimulate hair growth by repairing blood vessels, promoting cell growth and increasing collagen production.

Treatments are initially administered monthly for 3 months with a follow up session at 3-6 months. I then individualize additional treatments based on your unique situation. Treatments are performed in the comfort of my office and virtually have no side effects, but I do recommend you bring a hat for the drive home.
